Breakthrough Toothpaste Fights Gum Disease While Preserving Good Mouth Bacteria
Researchers at Germany’s Fraunhofer Society have developed a new toothpaste that targets only the bacteria responsible for periodontitis, leaving beneficial oral microbes intact. Unlike standard antibacterial products, this formula suppresses harmful microbes and lets helpful bacteria restore balance naturally. It also contains fluoride to protect against tooth decay. The innovation comes from PerioTrap Pharmaceuticals, which plans to expand the line with a complementary mouthwash and a post-cleaning gel. Early studies suggest this approach could curb recurring gum disease and its links to diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer’s.
