APC Accuses Makinde of Reckless ‘Operation Wetie’ Reference
The APC has condemned Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for invoking Operation Wetie at an opposition summit in Ibadan. The party described the historical reference as reckless and potentially inciting violence. Makinde warned against a single party consolidating legislative power, recalling Nigeria’s 1960s western region unrest, when opponents’ homes and vehicles were set ablaze. He likened today’s threats to that era’s “Wild Wild West.” In a statement, the APC said a sitting governor should not use violent imagery and urged security agencies to act. It stressed that constitutional immunity does not block accountability for statements deemed a threat to national security. The party also dismissed fears of a looming one-party state. It blamed opposition challenges on internal divisions and criticized key figures for deepening instability rather than offering credible alternatives.
