Nigerian International Student Dies After Paid Plasma Donation in Winnipeg
Health Canada is reviewing two deaths reported among plasma donors at Grifols collection centres in Winnipeg. One of the fatalities was 22-year-old Rodiyat Alabede, an international student from Nigeria studying social work at the University of Winnipeg. She collapsed during a visit to the Taylor Avenue centre on October 25 and was pronounced dead before arriving at hospital. A second donor died on January 30 after giving plasma at Grifols’ Innovation Drive location. The federal regulator says it has not established a link between the donations and the deaths. Grifols, which pays donors up to $100 per visit plus loyalty bonuses, conducted an internal review and found no reason to believe plasma collection was the cause. All Canadian plasma centres must report serious donor reactions to Health Canada within 72 hours. The investigations are ongoing, and no official connection has been made between the donation process and the adverse outcomes.
