Nigerian Researcher Wins CAD$100,000 Grant to Improve Male Fertility Testing
Nigerian pharmacist and McGill University PhD researcher Chika Onochie has been selected for a Québec doctoral research scholarship worth up to CAD$100,000. The funding is subject to the programme's stated conditions and budget approvals. His research will examine molecular biomarkers that may show whether sperm can fertilise an egg, including in cases where conventional semen analysis appears normal. Current tests commonly assess sperm count, movement and shape, but may not provide a complete picture of fertility. A University of Benin first-class graduate, Onochie says infertility should be approached as a couple’s issue. He hopes improved testing will support fairer and more accurate fertility assessments for men and women.
