Canada’s Ontario Opens New Permanent Residence Route for Foreign Workers

Ontario has opened applications for its Workforce Priority Stream, a new route to permanent residence for eligible foreign workers under the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program. From August 4, 2026, candidates with qualifying job offers from approved Ontario employers can submit an Expression of Interest through the provincial portal. The stream covers higher-skilled workers, lower-skilled workers and self-employed physicians registered to practise in Ontario. Candidates will be ranked under a points-based system and selected through periodic draws. Those invited have 17 days to submit a complete application, while employers have 14 days to seek approval for the job position. Successful nominees may receive support to apply for a federal work permit while their permanent residence application is processed. Some higher-skilled workers and physicians may also qualify for faster processing through the Express Entry-linked provincial nominee route.
