Marriage and Money: Should Both Spouses Share the Financial Load?
Financial independence is important for both spouses. Every partner should be able to earn, save, invest and build personal security. However, independence should not mean one person keeps all their income while expecting the other to carry rent, school fees, food, emergencies and family responsibilities alone. Whether a wife earns more or a husband earns more, the stronger income should be seen as a benefit to the family, not a reason for competition or entitlement. A partner can lose a job, face business setbacks or go through difficult seasons. Marriage should be able to survive those changes. If my wife becomes the bigger earner tomorrow, I should support her without feeling threatened. If I earn more, she should not see my income as hers alone to spend because I am the man. We should bring our resources together, agree on responsibilities and build a secure future as partners. The real question is not who earns more. It is whether both people are willing to build together.
