My Best Friend Moved to the UK Without Telling Me
My best friend and I were inseparable for almost 14 years. We grew up playing basketball, shared family celebrations across our Christian and Muslim homes, and supported each other through school, work and personal struggles. In 2018, he told me he was visiting his sister in the UK. Months later, I planned to stay with him in Lagos, only to learn from one of his friends that he had moved abroad and held a goodbye party without telling me. He said his family believed revealing his travel plans would make them fail. I felt betrayed, especially because we had spent time together after he returned from the UK and he never mentioned leaving. We have not spoken in seven years, and the experience has made me more guarded in my friendships.
