Understanding Odu Esentaiye in Ifa Tradition
Odu Esentaiye is an Ifa reading traditionally performed at a child’s birth. In Yoruba spiritual practice, such readings were sought for guidance and clarity about important events and decisions. The belief is that the reading draws on the spirit’s past incarnations to offer insight into the person’s character and possible path in life. A later reading may also be undertaken during Igbodu, when the person is considered an accountable adult with a clearer life direction. Some adherents believe Odu Esentaiye may be especially significant for a person believed to have come to Earth with a spiritual mission. These interpretations are matters of Ifa belief and tradition.
