Insurgents Block Key Routes into Bamako, Deepening Mali’s Supply Crisis
Bamako is under growing threat as jihadist fighters have blocked major supply routes into the capital. The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-linked coalition, claims responsibility for the roadblocks used for food, fuel and commercial goods. Recent attacks on military convoys and trucks have forced some vehicles to turn back or be destroyed. These actions follow coordinated assaults in late April on towns and military positions near Kati, just outside Bamako. Although government forces maintain control of the city, analysts warn the blockade could worsen living conditions and strain Mali’s fragile economy. The move marks a sharp escalation in a crisis that has persisted despite years of military operations by the ruling junta and regional allies.
