UNILAG VC Urges Universities to Regulate, Not Ban, AI Use

UNILAG Vice-Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola has urged Nigerian universities to create ethical guidelines for artificial intelligence in teaching and research instead of trying to ban it. Speaking at LASU’s Research and Innovation Fair, she said AI can improve learning when teachers supervise its use. She cited an English-language learning study in which students made progress in six weeks that researchers expected traditional teaching to achieve in about two years. Ogunsola warned that unchecked dependence on AI could weaken students’ ability to reason, analyse and think critically. She said universities must rethink assessment methods, as lecturers may otherwise end up assessing AI-generated work rather than students’ knowledge. She called on educators to use AI responsibly while protecting academic integrity, privacy, intellectual property and the human skills technology cannot replace.
