NELFUND Beneficiaries Seek Faster Upkeep Payments and Clearer Tracking as MOUAU Starts Fee Refunds

Beneficiaries of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) in Abia and Imo say the scheme has helped them remain in school amid rising education costs. However, they want clearer beneficiary records, real-time application tracking and faster payment of the ₦20,000 monthly upkeep allowance. One student said delays meant several months of upkeep payments arrived at once, making it difficult to buy textbooks and meet other urgent academic needs. Another beneficiary said the loan had eased the pressure on low-income families and allowed students to focus on their studies. Meanwhile, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, has begun refunding students who paid their tuition before NELFUND support was released. The university said more than 12,000 of its students have benefited from the scheme so far.
