Government, Vengeance, and the Bible: A Call to State Justice
On March 30, 2026, Israel’s parliament approved a law mandating the state to execute terrorists. Until then, only Adolf Eichmann had faced capital punishment for terrorism. Even after decades of attacks, most Palestinian militants received long prison terms. Yahya Sinwar, released in 2011 after serving life for terror charges, orchestrated the October 7, 2023 massacre before being killed in 2024. Scripture clearly endorses death for murderers. Exodus 21:12 and Numbers 35:33 demand the shedding of a killer’s blood. Romans 13:3-4 then entrusts governments with the sword to punish evil. As modern societies reject capital punishment, they risk encouraging crime and burdening taxpayers with lifelong sentences. History shows states must wield force to survive. Early Christians endured persecution in Rome until Constantine. Later, medieval Europe and the crusades resisted Islamic expansion. Today, China and Singapore curb crime through firm laws and capital punishment. By contrast, Western nations face rising murder rates after abolishing the death penalty. Nigerians must choose leaders who value justice and swift deterrents. Lawmakers should enact sound statutes for capital crimes and ensure efficient trials. Amnesty for violent insurgents like Boko Haram only deepens bloodshed. Governments must be equipped to avenge evil and protect citizens. Israel’s unwavering response to its enemies underscores the biblical duty of states to defend the innocent.
