Remi Tinubu Defends Grants for Akara, Roasted Corn and Kuli-Kuli Ventures
According to reports, Nigeria’s First Lady spoke to State House correspondents after the Renewed Hope Initiative meeting in Abuja. She explained that the programme awards grants—not loans—to help beneficiaries start small businesses like selling akara, roasting corn or producing kuli-kuli. She highlighted other interventions, including a N2 billion donation to fight tuberculosis, N1 billion for breast cancer support and N500 million to combat malnutrition. The initiative has also backed education, agriculture, ICT training and social investment projects. Her comments sparked mixed reactions online. Some Nigerians felt the advice was out of touch given the country’s economic challenges, while others defended the dignity of honest labour. Despite the criticism, she urged citizens to keep hope alive as the programme continues to support vulnerable communities.
