DSS Arraigns Man for Social Media Call for Military Coup Against Tinubu

DSS Arraigns Man for Social Media Call for Military Coup Against Tinubu

The Department of State Services arraigned Paul Jibrin Oweleke at the Federal High Court in Lagos on two counts of cybercrime offences. He is accused of using his social media platform, “Oweleke TV”, to urge the military to overthrow President Bola Tinubu and emulate political changes seen in Burkina Faso. Oweleke pleaded not guilty to charges of incitement and transmission of messages capable of disrupting public order and constitutional governance. The prosecution argued that his broadcasts threatened law and order and placed the President’s office in fear of harm. Counsel for the defence confirmed a bail application has been filed. The court adjourned to June 16, 2026, for a hearing on bail. The charges are brought under Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024.

The DSS seems to be stepping up on cybercrime charges when it involves political commentary. Hard to tell if it's truly about security or control.

Journalists and users should review social media rules and avoid language that could be construed as incitement to reduce legal exposure.
