Dormitory Fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Kenya Claims 16 Lives
At least 16 students died when a pre-dawn blaze tore through the dormitory of Utumishi Girls Senior Secondary School in Gilgil, Kenya. The fire broke out around 1:00am and was reported at about 3:30am, according to the Kenya Red Cross. More than 200 learners were sleeping in the packed dormitory when the fire spread. Dozens of injured students were rushed to nearby hospitals and are reported to be in stable condition. Kenya Red Cross first responders, ambulance crews and psychosocial support personnel joined other emergency teams on the ground. Authorities are investigating the cause of the tragedy. President William Ruto mourned the loss and said the government’s immediate focus is on rescue operations, treatment for the injured and support for affected families.
