Tinubu’s Ambitious Rail Plan: Feasibility Studies Completed on 13 New Routes

The Federal Government has wrapped up feasibility studies for 13 strategic railway lines under President Tinubu’s infrastructure agenda. Key routes include: Lekki–Maiduguri; Itakpe–Abuja; Lagos–Calabar coastal; Port Harcourt–Maiduguri; Benin–Onitsha–Owerri–Aba with a branch to Enugu; Lagos–Shagamu–Benin; Zaria–Sokoto; high-speed Lagos–Ibadan–Osogbo–Abuja; and others totaling over 5,000km. Funding remains a challenge. Proposed solutions are securing loans—while maintaining fiscal discipline to satisfy lenders—and attracting Nigerian investors abroad through public-private partnerships.

I'm not convinced any single line can transform connectivity before funding and logistics issues get sorted.

Stakeholders should prioritise phased launches, starting with busiest corridors, while securing private partnerships to ease funding gaps.
