FG Begins Training 5,000 Meter Installers as Nigeria Targets 7 Million Smart Meters
The Federal Government has launched training for 5,000 young Nigerians to install smart meters under the Presidential Metering Initiative. The programme is intended to reduce estimated billing, improve billing accuracy and strengthen trust between electricity consumers and distribution companies. The government plans to install more than seven million smart meters nationwide. Nearly 220,000 people reportedly applied for the first 5,000 training slots, highlighting strong demand for technical jobs in the power sector. Trainees will receive practical instruction from the National Power Training Institute, certification through the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency, and possible employment opportunities with electricity distribution companies and meter providers. The training will begin in Abuja before expanding to the six geopolitical zones.
