Why Do Nigerian Pastors Rarely Preach About Esau?
I often hear Nigerian Pentecostal pastors preach about Ishmael as “the son of the bondwoman.” Yet Genesis 17:19–21 says Ishmael was blessed, made fruitful and promised to become a great nation. This makes me wonder why Esau is discussed far less often. Malachi 1:2–4 contains a much harsher passage about Esau and Edom, while 2 Esdras 6:9 is also frequently cited in discussions about Esau and Jacob. Are these passages being overlooked, or are they interpreted differently in Nigerian churches? I believe pastors should give fuller context when teaching about Ishmael, Esau and God’s covenant with Abraham’s descendants.
