Why Atheists Should Stop Debating Jesus and Evolution as Proof Against God
I recently watched an argument that confused atheism with questions it does not necessarily answer. Atheism concerns whether there is sufficient evidence for any god. It does not depend on rejecting every historical claim in Christianity or on settling every scientific debate. First, the question of whether Jesus existed does not establish that the Christian God exists. Most historians accept that Jesus was a real first-century figure, but a person’s existence does not prove miracle claims made about that person. The central question is whether there is credible evidence for the resurrection and other supernatural claims. Second, evolution explains how life diversified, not whether a god exists. Even if evolution were false, that would not prove the Christian account of creation. Evolution challenges some design arguments, but it does not by itself settle questions about cosmology, morality, purpose or religious experience. I think atheists should focus on the claims that directly matter: the evidence for a supernatural being, the evidence for Christianity’s specific teachings, and issues such as suffering, divine hiddenness, the Trinity and hell. Debating history or biology can be useful, but neither should be treated as a final verdict on atheism or the existence of God.
