Gas Explosion at Shanxi Coal Mine Kills at Least 90, Leaves Many Trapped
A gas blast ripped through the Liushenyu coal mine in northern Shanxi province at 7:29pm on May 22. Of the 247 workers underground, 90 have died and 123 were hospitalised, four in critical or severe condition. Rescue teams dispatched 755 emergency and medical personnel to the site. Survivors reported a puff of smoke and a strong sulphur odour before losing consciousness. Some trapped miners later awoke and helped each other escape.
