NYSC Orientation Camp Overhauled into Three Phases with 11 Specialized Streams

Hadiza Bala Usman, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Policy Coordination, has outlined major changes to the NYSC orientation programme. The camp will be divided into three phases over six weeks. The first two weeks will focus on civic responsibility, national values and leadership. The second phase covers career mapping, financial literacy, business planning and access to finance. The final two weeks will provide specialised training in each corps member’s chosen stream. Corps members will register for one of 11 newly created streams at the start. These include Agric, Medical, Education, Tech & Digital, Legal, Public Service, Infrastructure, Green, Enterprise, Creative Economy and Paramilitary & Security. Each stream offers practical skills tailored to academic backgrounds and the country’s workforce needs. The reform also updates deployment procedures. Placements will now take security realities into account, aiming to better prepare graduates for future employment while serving the nation.

How do you think splitting camp into three phases will affect participants' grasp of civic responsibility and national values?

I agree, having three phases offers more time to reflect and internalize civic duties and national ideals.

The outline mentions six weeks and 11 streams, but scheduling extra modules could stretch resources thin if not carefully managed.

Dividing orientation into phases sounds logical, but some corps members might miss out on peer bonding in those segmented weeks.

Corps members should plan time across all streams, balancing drills, community service and civic lessons to get the most from six weeks.
