Suspected Islamic State Attacks Kill 38 Nigerien Soldiers in Dosso and Diffa
Suspected Islamic State fighters reportedly killed at least 38 Nigerien soldiers in two attacks on military positions in the Dosso and Diffa regions. The first attack reportedly struck a forward operating base at Dankassari in Dosso Region after intense fighting. Twenty-one soldiers were said to have been killed, while the number of wounded or missing personnel was not immediately known. Hours earlier, another attack in N’Guigmi, Diffa Region, reportedly killed 17 security personnel, including an officer. The incidents highlight Niger’s continuing struggle with extremist violence despite military operations in several affected regions. Conflict-monitoring data indicates that thousands of people, including more than 2,000 security personnel, have been killed in terrorism-related violence in Niger since the July 2023 military takeover.
