NBA President Afam Osigwe Warns Politicians’ Gifts to Judges Undermine Judicial Independence
The Nigerian Bar Association president, Afam Osigwe, has condemned politicians who build courts or buy cars for judges. He said these public displays erode the judiciary’s integrity and weaken public trust. Osigwe argued that judicial needs should be handled through proper budgetary processes rather than through executive patronage. He warned that visible gifts portray judges as beneficiaries of political favour and demean the bench. He also urged lawyers to resist being tools of desperate politicians and cautioned against the over-judicialisation of Nigeria’s electoral process. Last year, FCT authorities pledged more housing for judges, and President Tinubu has called on judges to rebuild public confidence in the justice system.
