IOM Supports Over 67,000 Stranded Nigerian Migrants and Empowers 30,000 Returnees

The UN International Organization for Migration has assisted more than 67,000 stranded Nigerian migrants through its Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration programme since 2017. Over 30,000 of these returnees have received psychological, social and economic integration support. At a three-day migration reporting workshop in Lagos, IOM Project Assistant on Awareness Raising Fatima Adeyemi highlighted the organisation’s partnerships with ECOWAS and other entities to ensure legal migration and smooth free movement across borders. IOM is also working with government secondary schools, unity schools and institutions near borders to educate young people on safe migration practices and to discourage illegal journeys. A dedicated Migration Resource Centre within the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment verifies information and guides potential migrants. In collaboration with the National Commission for Refugees, IOM is developing a national referral mechanism for stranded Nigerians abroad. Returnees can seek help at IOM offices or Nigerian embassies to secure safe returns and successful reintegration.
