Umuoyima Community Urges Governor Uzodimma to Halt Alleged Land Grabbing

Umuoyima Community Urges Governor Uzodimma to Halt Alleged Land Grabbing — 1 of 2
1 / 2

The people of Umuoyima in Owerri Municipal Council have accused several high-ranking officials of attempting to seize their ancestral land, Ugwumiri Okpo Umuoyima. They named the Deputy Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly and the Commissioner for Tourism in the dispute. According to Elder Ucheoma Charles, the community filed a court case against the alleged invaders through a Senior Advocate, but no defence was entered. Meanwhile, they say some officials have begun demolishing property and harassing residents with police backing. The community claims these actors are using the governor’s name to legitimize their actions. They have appealed directly to Governor Hope Uzodimma to investigate and call the accused to order. Fearing further intimidation, residents have also asked security agencies to ensure their safety. They warn that unchecked land grabs could damage public trust in the administration.

Agreed, filing official land records and involving neutral observers could help, although powerful interests may still override community concerns.

It's odd say both the Deputy Speaker and Tourism Commissioner are accused yet no formal land survey details dey shared.

I'm not convinced local authorities can overturn actions by powerful politicians without broader legal support or pressure from human rights groups.

Community members should document land ownership records carefully and seek advice from property law experts before escalating this situation.
