Why a State of Emergency Is Nigeria’s Best Answer to Insecurity

Why a State of Emergency Is Nigeria’s Best Answer to Insecurity

I know many people want to blame President Tinubu for our security crisis, but it isn’t fair to pin all the problems on him. He inherited a system weighed down by years of unresolved violence and insurgency. What we need now is decisive action. Declaring a state of emergency in the most troubled states isn’t a new idea—former administrations have used it to restore order. Our military has the capacity and the courage; what they lack is clear authority and full backing. If we can treat political tensions as urgent matters, we can surely spare the same urgency for lives lost daily. It’s time to stop talking and let our forces act. A state of emergency in restive regions could finally bring this crisis to an end.

Alongside any emergency declaration, federal and state governments should coordinate clear metrics and timelines to restore security while maintaining civil rights.
