MOUAU Leaders Accused of Bypassing Due Process in ₦500m Contract and Loan Deal
The Pro-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Comrade Fidelis Edeh, and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ursula Ngozi Akanwa have been accused of bypassing procurement procedures in contracts reportedly valued at ₦500 million. The allegations involve the renovation of the Vice-Chancellor’s office, construction of Gate 5, repainting works and reconstruction of the IBB Students’ Hostel. Sources allege that a senior assistant registrar signed the contracts instead of the Registrar, who is ordinarily responsible for such documentation. The report also alleges that MOUAU Microfinance Bank obtained a ₦500 million commercial-bank loan for a contractor nominated by the Pro-Chancellor, with expected student fees allegedly used as collateral. University stakeholders fear the arrangement could increase financial pressure on students and expose depositors’ funds to risk. A Works Department source claimed the projects did not pass through the relevant university procurement bodies. The university’s spokesperson did not respond to enquiries at the time of the report.
