Kano Approves ₦4.7bn Annual Salary Review for Staff of Two State Universities

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved a new salary package for academic and non-academic staff of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, and Northwest University, Kano. The package mirrors the remuneration structure adopted by federal universities. It will take effect from January 2026, with payments scheduled to begin in September 2026. The review will cost the state about ₦391.85 million monthly, or ₦4.7 billion annually. Kano will include ₦1.57 billion in its 2026 supplementary budget for payments from September to December, while ₦3.13 billion in arrears for January to August will be covered in the 2027 budget. The governor also approved consideration of visitation panels for the institutions and other state tertiary schools to improve accountability and management.

Will this federal-style salary structure make it easier for the two Kano universities to retain both lecturers and non-academic staff?

It is encouraging that the review covers non-academic workers too, since universities rely on far more than teaching staff.

Matching federal university pay sounds positive, but the real test will be whether the approved package is implemented consistently every year.

The universities should clearly explain when the new rates begin and how staff can confirm their updated salary details.
