Katsina Vaccinates Over 150,000 People in Five Days as Diphtheria Outbreak Spreads

Katsina State says it vaccinated 150,346 people within five days of launching an emergency campaign to contain a diphtheria outbreak. The campaign began on August 25 in 15 high-risk wards across Bakori, Charanchi, Funtua, Mashi and Kankia LGAs. The state reported that 99,036 people aged five to 15 received the Td vaccine, while 51,310 children received the Pentavalent vaccine. Suspected cases have been reported across 29 LGAs, with Funtua recording the highest burden. Authorities have activated surveillance, contact tracing, treatment and isolation measures. Three additional isolation centres have been opened, while 650,000 more doses of diphtheria-containing vaccines have been secured for affected and high-risk communities. Residents are urged to seek urgent medical care for symptoms including sore throat, fever, neck swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, and a greyish or whitish membrane in the throat or nose.
