ADM 53/39021: Reclaiming Igbo-Ukwu Bronze and Restoring Our History

We face four obstacles blocking Igbo history: silence in museum catalogues, colonial law that locks away our artifacts, a century of distorted narratives, and divisions among ourselves. One bronze Ikenga—catalogue code ADM 53/39021—still sits in the British Museum under “unknown.” On 17 June 2026, we move from asking to showing. Post the code ADM 53/39021, highlight Igbo-Ukwu 900 AD and the Nri Kingdom’s legacy. Use #IgboHistory #BringThemHome #NriKingdom to tag the world and reveal where the wall stands. This is how we reclaim our past. We do not mourn; we publish. Every voice breaks the silence and brings our history home.

It's surprising how colonial-era laws still block rightful ownership claims for Igbo-Ukwu artifacts outside Nigeria.

Highlighting one bronze piece may overlook other equally neglected artifacts and fractures within our own community.

We could form a coalition of local historians to petition for legal reform and repatriation of ADM 53/39021 bronze.
