Peter’s Confession: Recognizing Jesus as the Messiah (Matthew 16:13-20)

As Jesus and His disciples arrived in the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked them what others were saying about His identity. Some compared Him to John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah or another prophet. Jesus then turned to His disciples and asked, “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter boldly answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus praised Peter’s insight as a revelation from heaven and declared that on this “rock” He would build His church. He entrusted Peter with the keys of the kingdom, promising that the gates of Hades would not overcome it. Then Jesus instructed them to keep His identity as Messiah private for the time being.
