Rare August Total Solar Eclipse to Darken Northern Spain
A rare total solar eclipse will plunge parts of northern Spain into darkness on August 12. It’s the first total eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 2006. A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and Earth. During totality, daylight turns into twilight, temperatures drop, and animals may behave as if night has fallen. The path of totality starts over northern Russia and moves across Greenland, Iceland, Spain and northeastern Portugal. In Oviedo and on Mallorca, viewers will experience nearly two minutes of darkness just before sunset. Experts warn never to look directly at the Sun without proper ISO-certified eclipse glasses. Eye damage can occur without pain, so protection is essential.
