Bamidele: State Police Bill Had Widespread Public Backing to Tackle Insecurity

Bamidele: State Police Bill Had Widespread Public Backing to Tackle Insecurity

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele says the State Police Bill of 2026 reflects years of national consultations and strong public support. He insists the amendment addresses Nigeria’s security challenges rather than political motives. According to Bamidele, the proposal underwent thorough examination during the constitutional review process. Stakeholders from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, state legislatures and the Nigeria Police Force contributed memoranda and recommendations to build in accountability and oversight. Public hearings across all six geopolitical zones in July 2025 showed clear support for state policing. Bamidele adds that 84 of 109 senators—representing over 77%—voted for the bill, including members of opposition parties. He urged political actors to prioritise national safety over partisan interests by refining the legislation where needed instead of rejecting it outright.

I doubt the proposal purely aims at security; there's always a risk state governors will exploit new forces for political gain.

To make this effective, lawmakers should require transparent funding channels and community oversight panels before authorizing state police.
