Court Grants N3M Bail to Ex-SDP Chairman Over Alleged Fund Mismanagement

The Federal Capital Territory Chief Magistrates Court remanded former Social Democratic Party national chairman Alhaji Shehu Gabam on charges of criminal misappropriation of party funds, breach of trust and forgery. Gabam and co-defendant Chukwuma Ogbonna Uchechukwu appeared before Chief Magistrate Amauche Onyedium in suit No. DCC/10/2026. The court adjourned for further hearing on May 25 after admitting Gabam to bail in the sum of ₦3 million with two Abuja-based sureties. He also surrendered his international passport to the court registrar. Current SDP chairman Dr. Sadiq Abubakar initiated the direct criminal complaint after internal audits flagged nearly ₦31 million in unaccounted funds and later uncovered transactions totalling about ₦740 million. Earlier petitions to INEC, the police, EFCC, ICPC and DSS reportedly drew no action. Gabam was suspended in June 2025 and subsequently expelled along with other officials over alleged gross misconduct.

Do you think granting bail here suggests party leaders will treat fund mismanagement as a minor issue?

It's surprising that the court allowed such a modest bail for accusations involving breach of trust and forgery.

Granting bail doesn't automatically prove innocence; we shouldn't treat this as exoneration before trial.

Party leadership should tighten financial oversight and demand transparent accounting to prevent similar allegations in the future.
