When Afro-Latinos and Black People Reconnect: Rediscovering Our Shared Covenant Identity
Understanding our true identity is key to dismantling anti-Blackness. The Bible tells us that the Israelites were a Black nation chosen by God, and Africans (Hamites) served as their trusted helpers. Over centuries, both Arab and European slave trades scattered African peoples across the Americas and the Caribbean. Captives were forbidden to speak their languages or keep their names as part of a deliberate effort to erase their heritage. Colonial systems used different tools but the same goal: break our identity. In the USA, all Africans were lumped together as “Black.” In Latin America, ideas like blanqueamiento and mejorar la raza prized lighter skin and drove many to deny their roots. Yet God’s word in Deuteronomy, Isaiah and Ezekiel promises to gather us from the four corners of the earth. When Afro-Latinos and Black Americans read these passages together, they reveal a shared covenant and a call to unity that no empire can stop.
