Nigerians Question Egypt Women Wearing Seven AFCON Stars at WAFCON
Egypt’s women’s national team has sparked debate at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after wearing seven stars above its badge. The Cleopatras have never won WAFCON, but the stars are said to represent Egypt men’s record seven AFCON titles. Nigerian fans have questioned whether CAF should allow a women’s side to display honours won by the men’s team. Some argued that the Super Eagles could similarly add the Super Falcons’ WAFCON titles to their own three AFCON stars. The debate has also renewed calls for CAF to clearly state whether national-team stars can be shared across men’s, women’s and youth sides. FIFA had previously required Egypt’s men to remove the stars at the 2026 World Cup because they did not represent World Cup victories.
