Nigerian Sprinters Dominate NCAA Championships in Eugene
Nigerian athletes stole the spotlight at the 2026 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Kanyinsola Ajayi clinched the men’s 100m title in a wind-assisted 9.72 seconds, after setting a new Nigerian record of 9.84 seconds earlier in the meet. He became the third Nigerian ever to win the NCAA 100m crown. Samuel Ogazi delivered a world-leading 43.38 seconds to shatter the NCAA 400m record and reinforce his status as one of the most exciting young quarter-milers. Israel Okon also impressed, grabbing silver in the 200m with a personal best of 19.99 seconds. AFN President Tonobok Okowa praised the athletes for their courage, discipline and consistency. He said their performances show that the next generation of Nigerian talent is poised to compete among the world’s best.
