Abejide Denies Forced Retirements in Customs Succession

Abejide Denies Forced Retirements in Customs Succession

Rt. Hon. Leke Joseph Abejide, Chairman of the House Committee on Customs and Excise, has dismissed claims that the appointment of Deputy Comptroller I.D. Olorunfemi as the next Comptroller-General will force senior officers into early retirement. He says all exits follow the Public Service Rules. Abejide called the reports misleading. He explained that officers retire by law at age 60 or after 35 years in service. No one is being removed to make room for another. He pointed to a 16-year recruitment gap that created a crowded senior cadre. Over 1,500 officers are set to retire under statutory provisions, he added. Abejide also rejected any personal or political link to the nominee. He stressed the succession process aims for stable leadership and addresses long-standing structural imbalances in the Nigeria Customs Service.
