Gara Gombe Calls for Probe, Blames Dalung and Dare for Decay of National Stadiums
Former Gombe State Football Association chairman Shuaib Gara Gombe has blamed former sports ministers Solomon Dalung and Sunday Dare for the long-running decline of the National Stadium in Lagos and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. He called for an investigation into concession agreements involving facilities at the stadiums, including the swimming pool, Games Village, indoor sports hall and main gate. Gombe alleged that the terms and use of funds linked to the deals were not sufficiently transparent. He also questioned the outcome of about ₦1 billion reportedly donated to renovate the Abuja stadium’s pitch and electronic scoreboard during Dare’s tenure. Gombe said Nigeria now has only one FIFA- and CAF-approved stadium, the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, and urged the Federal Government to investigate.
