Brisbane 2032 Approves Crocodile-Infested River for Olympic Rowing and Canoeing
Australia’s Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, home to an estimated 500 saltwater crocodiles, has been approved to host rowing and canoeing events at the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. An independent assessment found that the river could provide suitable competition conditions across different weather patterns, water levels and flood risks. The venue already hosts school regattas, local competitions and national-team training camps. Organisers say safety plans already exist for crocodile sightings during events, while World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide have endorsed the facility. However, Olympic rowing champion Drew Ginn has raised concerns about flooding, lane fairness, athlete safety and the distance between Rockhampton and Brisbane.
