ASUU Strikes Halt Activities at Nasarawa and Imo State Universities

Academic activities have been suspended at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and Imo State University, Owerri, after their ASUU chapters began indefinite strikes. ASUU's National Executive Council has also authorised 20 university branches to begin processes that could lead to industrial action over the alleged slow implementation of the 2025 agreement with the Federal Government. The affected branches are to issue 14-day ultimatums before commencing strikes if their demands remain unresolved. At Nasarawa State University, ASUU said it withdrew services over more than ₦3 billion in unpaid entitlements, including earned academic allowances, minimum-wage consequential adjustments and approved salary increases. At Imo State University, the union cited delayed implementation of the agreement, promotion arrears dating back to 2016, unpaid salaries and concerns over deductions from internally generated revenue. The union also directed branches in federal universities affected by salary underpayments to press for the resolution of their grievances.

With two universities already affected and more branches authorised to begin processes, how worried should students be about the next academic calendar?

Authorising strike processes at 20 branches does not necessarily mean all 20 will suspend activities immediately, so the situation may still vary by campus.

Students at Nasarawa State University and Imo State University should follow official school and ASUU updates, while keeping study materials organised during the suspension.
