Why Do Some Nigerian Families Turn Against Widows After Their Son Dies?

Marriage is often described as the union of two families, yet many Nigerian women do not experience that unity when their husbands die. While a wife’s family may support her husband through his business, career and personal struggles, some husbands’ families still treat the wife as an outsider. After the man’s death, the focus can quickly shift from her grief and the children’s welfare to questions about property, the house and what belongs to the family. A woman who built a home with their son and raised his children should not suddenly be treated as an enemy. If she was accepted as a wife while he was alive, she and her children deserve compassion, protection and support after his death. We need to rethink a system that treats widows and grandchildren as obstacles in inheritance disputes. Family should mean more than blood, property and entitlement. It should include responsibility and humanity.
