Okocha Explains Why Bayern Munich Could Not Sign Him in 1991

Former Super Eagles captain Austin Okocha says Bayern Munich tried to sign him in 1991 after he impressed while playing for their youth side at a tournament in Switzerland. He said German age rules prevented Bayern from offering him an immediate professional contract. Because he turned 18 in August, he would have had to wait almost a year before becoming eligible to play professionally. Okocha chose not to wait and continued his career in Germany, first with Borussia Neunkirchen before joining Eintracht Frankfurt, where he became a Bundesliga star.

Bayern missing out sounds significant, but one blocked move does not automatically mean his later path was worse.
