Gunfire Erupts Near Niamey Airport, Sparks Panic
On Thursday morning, gunshots were heard near Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, causing alarm among residents and travellers. The first volley rang out around 6:00 a.m. at the airport entrance, then resumed about two hours later. Security forces quickly increased patrols around the terminal and nearby roads. At the time of reporting, there was no confirmation of who was behind the shooting. This follows a similar attack in January linked to Islamic State affiliates, which was thwarted by Nigerien forces with support from allied troops. Niger has long battled armed groups connected to Al-Qaeda and Islamic State across the Sahel region.
