National Museum of Unity, Ibadan Marks 50 Years of Culture and Cohesion

National Museum of Unity, Ibadan Marks 50 Years of Culture and Cohesion

On 4 June 2026, the National Museum of Unity in Ibadan celebrated its golden jubilee alongside International Museum Day. The event brought together cultural enthusiasts, traditional leaders and officials to honour five decades of preserving Nigeria’s heritage. Founded after the civil war to promote national integration, the museum has amassed priceless artefacts and hosted countless educational initiatives. This year’s theme, “Museums: Uniting a Divided World”, underscored its enduring mission of peace and cultural understanding. Speakers from the National Commission for Museums and Monuments highlighted recent achievements, including Nigeria’s first digital museum, upgraded exhibition spaces and global repatriation efforts. Calls were made for continued partnerships to leverage heritage as a tool for unity. The festivities peaked with performances by the Asantiwa Cultural Group and Ekpe dancers. Guests also witnessed the unveiling of “Iba Oluyole”, a monumental sculpture celebrating Ibadan’s history. The golden jubilee reaffirmed the museum’s role as a beacon of unity, cultural pride and national identity.

I visited right after the jubilee too. The way the exhibits highlighted unity felt truly powerful that day.

It's impressive they've lasted five decades, but I wonder if the exhibits really reflect all the diverse cultures of Nigeria equally.

I hear say them focused too much on traditional leaders and forget grassroots cultural expressions dem.

Community outreach and digital catalogues could help the museum engage younger audiences and document local traditions more thoroughly.
