UN Reopens Khartoum Headquarters After Nearly Three Years
The United Nations has reopened its headquarters in Khartoum for the first time in three years. The move follows a forced relocation to Port Sudan after war erupted in April 2023. High-level officials attended the opening ceremony, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohieddin Salem, Khartoum Governor Ahmed Osman Hamza, and UN Resident Coordinator Denise Brown. The return to the capital will help UN agencies reach areas that were previously inaccessible. Denise Brown said the reopening will strengthen support for ending the conflict and rebuilding Sudan. Minister Salem described the day as historic and affirmed his government’s Hope for Peace initiative. He rejected any militia dictates and called for sustainable stability with international partners. UNDP Associate Administrator Xu Haoliang highlighted renewed humanitarian response and efforts to build national and local capacities. Sudan faces one of the region’s largest crises, with millions displaced and critical shortages in health, education, and food. According to the UN’s latest humanitarian plan, 33.7 million people will need assistance in 2026.
