Kaduna Mother Says Women’s Rights Non-Profit Fired Her After Maternity Leave
I spent years working as an advocacy officer for a non-profit that promoted women’s rights. Despite being qualified and committed to the work, I says I faced gender bias at work, including being excluded from key meetings, trips and presentations after I got married. When I became pregnant, I was sent on unpaid maternity leave and asked to hand over my work, including a grant proposal I had helped secure. I later learned that another employee had been hired to take over my role. After my leave ended, HR allegedly informed me through WhatsApp that I was no longer recognised as a staff member. I believe pregnancy should never be treated as a professional weakness, especially by organisations that claim to support women’s rights.
