Counterfeit Drugs and Adulterated Drinks Are a Growing Health Emergency in Nigeria
Counterfeit medicines and adulterated drinks are more than a market problem. They endanger lives, drain family savings, weaken legitimate businesses and place more pressure on Nigeria’s healthcare system. Fake or substandard medicines can cause treatment failure, prolonged illness, antimicrobial resistance, organ damage and death. Unsafe beverages can also expose consumers to harmful substances. Nigerians should buy medicines only from licensed pharmacies and obtain drinks from reputable sellers. Suspicious packaging, broken seals, strange appearance, missing registration details or unrealistically low prices should be treated as warning signs. NAFDAC, the police, customs, manufacturers, pharmacists and consumers must work together to stop illegal production and distribution networks. Stronger border controls, sustained monitoring of drug markets and firm punishment for offenders are necessary. Citizens should also report suspected counterfeit products promptly to the relevant authorities. Affordable access to quality healthcare is equally important. When people are forced to choose the cheapest options, fake products become more attractive. Protecting Nigerians from counterfeit drugs and dangerous beverages must remain a collective national responsibility.
