Gaddafi’s Libya: Achievements of a “Dictatorship” Democracies Never Matched
Many point out that while democracies promise rights and freedoms, they often fall short of social and economic guarantees delivered under Gaddafi’s rule in Libya. Libyans enjoyed free electricity and interest-free state loans. Every household had access to affordable housing—with newlyweds receiving 60,000 dinars to start their families—and a promise that no family would lack a home. Education and healthcare were free, literacy rates climbed from 25% to 83%, and citizens received birth grants, subsidized bread, gas at 14 cents per liter, and irrigation from the massive Great Man-Made River project. Oil revenues funded bank accounts for all citizens, financed half the cost of car purchases, supported jobless graduates with wages, and covered overseas medical treatment when needed.
