Senate Panel Orders Immediate Arrest of Mele Kyari Over ₦210 Trillion Audit Discrepancy

Senate Panel Orders Immediate Arrest of Mele Kyari Over ₦210 Trillion Audit Discrepancy

The Senate Committee on Public Accounts has voted to issue an arrest warrant for former NNPC Group Managing Director Mele Kyari. Lawmakers raised concerns over an unaccounted ₦210 trillion in federal petroleum revenues between 2017 and 2023. Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, committee chairman, and Victor Umeh led calls for Mr Kyari’s immediate detention after he repeatedly failed to appear before the panel. Adams Oshiomhole urged that the warrant be executed "dead or alive," accusing the NNPC of a long history of fraudulent practices. Some senators, including Saliu Mustapha and Tony Nwoye, argued Mr Kyari was ill and receiving treatment abroad. But the majority dismissed this, demanding documentary proof of any medical condition before granting further delay. Former NNPCL CFO Umar Isa defended the company’s records, insisting the alleged ₦210 trillion shortfall did not match the corporation’s audited earnings over the period under review.

This ₦210 trillion discrepancy covers six years—makes you wonder if earlier warnings were ignored or conveniently overlooked by the committee.

Issuing an arrest warrant seems extreme when audit reports often face delays and revisions—shouldn't the process be more transparent before taking that step?

Lawmakers should publish detailed findings immediately and involve independent auditors to clear doubts and restore public confidence.
